Mindset is seeking an experienced, client-centered Disability Hearing Attorney to represent claimants through disability hearings and appeals. This role combines strong legal advocacy, sound judgment, empathy, and disciplined case management to help clients navigate a complex and consequential process.

This is a hybrid role based in Mindset’s office in New York City’s Financial District. The attorney will work regularly from the office to collaborate with colleagues and may work remotely as appropriate. The specific in-office schedule will be discussed during the interview process.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel clients on SSI and SSDI eligibility, case strategy, application requirements, and the hearing and appeals process.
  • Prepare for and represent clients at disability hearings before administrative law judges, including developing persuasive arguments, examining witnesses, and presenting evidence.
  • Review and synthesize medical records, employment history, and other evidence to build clear, well-supported cases.
  • Conduct legal research and draft briefs, motions, and other submissions required for disability claims and appeals.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients, government agencies, administrative law judges, and internal partners.
  • Manage an active caseload, meet deadlines, maintain accurate documentation, and keep clients informed.
  • Stay current on Social Security Administration regulations, policies, procedures, and relevant case law.
  • Own the accuracy and completeness of applications, appeals, and supporting documentation, applying senior judgment to position cases for success.
  • Serve as the primary legal point of contact for clients and coordinate with the Social Security Administration and other agencies throughout each matter.
  • Partner closely with case managers, legal support staff, and fellow attorneys; provide coaching and mentorship to developing attorneys and team members.
  • Use and help improve digital case management systems, cloud-based collaboration tools, and AI-assisted legal workflows to manage caseloads efficiently and strengthen legal operations.

Requirements

  • Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state and authorization to represent claimants before the Social Security Administration.
  • Four or more years of relevant legal experience is preferred, with a track record of representing clients in disability hearings and appeals. Attorneys with less experience—or professionals with directly relevant experience before licensure—will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of Social Security Disability law, SSA regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent hearing, legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to interpret medical terminology, records, and diagnostic information and translate that evidence into a compelling case.
  • Empathy, sound judgment, ethical conduct, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to client advocacy.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, strong organization and time management, and comfort working in a technology-enabled environment.
  • Ability to work on a hybrid basis from Mindset’s Financial District office in New York City.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across legal and operations teams and to coach or mentor less-experienced attorneys and staff.
  • Advanced proficiency with digital case management systems and cloud-based tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, video conferencing, and AI-assisted legal technology; able to evaluate and improve technology-enabled workflows.
  • Experience with federal-level disability claims.
  • Experience working in a remote or technology-first environment.
