Reporting to the Engineering Manager - Capital Projects the Electrical and Controls Project Engineer is responsible for design and overseeing the planning, execution, and commissioning of electrical and controls engineering projects. This role requires technical expertise in the design of low and high voltage electrical power systems, and instrumentation and controls engineering. In addition to a specialist electrical and controls engineering skillset, the applicant needs to possess a multi-disciplinary understanding of process plant design and mine site infrastructure. The role requires the individual to take professional accountability for the delivery of engineered systems from concept through to operation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the detailed design and provide engineering solutions for site-wide infrastructure including process plant, water management, camp, and power systems. Oversee and manage the work of EPCM service providers, as well as take professional responsibility for in-house engineering.
  • Oversee the design of electrical reticulation systems including HV (230 kV / 25 kV substation and distribution), and LV distribution networks.
  • Conduct and/or oversee electrical/automation Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests.
  • Provide commissioning support and oversee PLC / HMI development and integration with existing SCADA systems.
  • For in-house projects - Prepare technical specifications, engineering drawings, schedules, and functional descriptions for electrical and control systems including grounding, lighting, cable support systems, switchgear, and control centers (MCCs).
  • For in-house projects - Prepare scopes of work and technical tender packages. Be responsible for the technical tender process and bid evaluations.
  • Functional design and coordination of automation systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for process plant operations.
  • Oversee the development of key technical project documents such as load, instrument, and IO lists.
  • Complete studies and trade-off analysis between technical options.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, regulations, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Manage engineering and design documentation produced by engineering firms and ensure that design and construction information is coordinated with all stakeholders.
  • Ensure construction is executed per the design intent and support commissioning through to operations. Complete site visits to assess existing systems, gather data, and provide hands-on support during the project execution and commissioning phases.
  • Review engineering/contractor deliverables for technical compliance, scope alignment, and quality.
  • Respond to Requests-for-Information (RFI) from engineers and construction contractors in a timely fashion.
  • Provide engineering input and work closely with QA/QC specialists to ensure received equipment and materials meet requirements and installations are completed to a best-in-class standard.
  • Demonstrate commercial acumen to optimize business outcomes.
  • Initiate, maintain and ensure safe keeping of accurate records of design reviews, workshops, and alignment meetings.
  • Weekly and monthly reporting.
  • Assist with the production of engineering and construction work packages.
  • Work in a team environment and share skills/experience with other members of the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) in British Columbia.
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering design experience in a multidisciplinary team environment, including field services during the construction phase of projects – responsibilities and compensation will depend on the candidate’s experience.
  • Familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).
  • Current knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant industry standards (CSA, ANSI, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, IECEx, etc.) for compliant designs.
  • Proven experience in designing and producing engineering documents, including procurement packages, P&IDs, single line diagrams, control network diagrams, and electrical location drawings.
  • Experienced in working closely with multi-disciplinary teams in a heavy industrial project development setting.
  • Recent mining project experience would be a strong asset, but other major capital project experience in the region could be transferable.
  • Experience working for an EPC/EPCm contractor or an Owner during the project development phase.
  • Ability to travel to the project site and other engineering offices as required and be comfortable working and living in close quarters with the team.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shift while on site.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with drafting and modelling software such as AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Possess an understanding of project management and project controls principles.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
