Duke Energy is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support engineering design, analysis, and plant modification activities at Catawba Nuclear Station. Engineers in this role support the design, analysis, modification, and maintenance of structures, systems, and components within an operating nuclear power plant. Work may include development of design change packages, structural analyses and evaluations, maintenance support, and independent review of peer-prepared engineering products. Work may include involvement with piping systems, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, HVAC systems, fluid systems, structural supports, and mechanical equipment.
This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressingly complex and varied.
This is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Support mechanical technical design and project coordination.
- →Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment and other process equipment.
- →Learn to prepare thorough and accurate engineering change packages, specifications, calculations and drawings associated with the resolution of plant technical problems.
- →Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
- →Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
- →Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
- →Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
- →Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
- →Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
- →Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Understanding of engineering theories and principles in thermodynamics and hydraulic fundamentals.
- Proficient in principles of project management.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- State registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
- In addition to required degree, 3-6 years related work experience within a utility company or Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm.
- ASME Code knowledge for pressure vessels and piping systems
- Background in heat exchangers, pumps, valves and rotating equipment
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
- Occasional overnight travel.

- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 2 full workdays per regular work week.
