Working onboard an at sea processing vessel is physically and mentally challenging. The environment is wet and cold and the shifts are long. The job requires physical endurance, repetitive lifting and agility, prolonged periods of standing, teamwork and self-discipline. Crew members make a contractual commitment to being at sea for extended periods of time, leaving family and friends at home.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Convert raw fish into a frozen-at-sea finished product
  • Sort fish by species, size and condition
  • Package, weigh and label product
  • Load and unload plate freezers
  • Operate and clean factory equipment
  • Offload of frozen product to warehouse
  • Load and unload other supplies on the vessel
  • Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas and bathrooms

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years commercial fishing OR
  • 1+ year of experience performing physical work

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of factory trawler operations and conditions preferred.
  • Able to work 16 hour shifts, 7 days a week
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. repetitively
  • Must be able to work in a cold and wet environment for extended period of time
  • Must be able to perform fast paced, repetitive tasks for long periods of time
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without assistance by climbing up or down gangplank, or by using a Jacob’s ladder.
  • Must be capable of understanding and following specific English written, oral and visual directions and instructions in the event of emergency.
  • Must adhere to all safety and quality policies and regulations of the vessel and company. 
  • Must be able to share room assignments and bathroom facilities and eat in common dining areas with other crew
  • Must be capable of working and living on board a vessel for extended periods of time; up to 65 days without having access to immediate medical assistance except for first aid.
