Senior AI Full Stack Engineer @ High Growth AI Startup - Rp 35m-40m/month (Contract-to-Hire Opportunity)

Kulu is an AI startup, backed by some of the world’s leading investors including Antler (backers of Lovable and Airalo) and Redbus (backers of Cleo). We are building AI agents for software companies that run video calls with their users to get them onboarded. Imagine joining a Zoom call with an AI to help you get set up using a new piece of software - just share your screen and speak with the AI as it guides you through configuration.

Kulu is led by a rockstar founding team: Ed (CEO) - 1st PM at Teya ($1b+ valuation in 2 years) and one previous exit. Rio (CTO) - PhD in AI, specialising in neural networks and CV. Oscar (CCO) - Former Head of Sales at multiple VC-backed companies.

Kulu has two offices: London - Commercial Office, and Bali - Product & Engineering Office. The founding team works from both locations.

The role is based in Bali and we can offer a relocation package for the right candidate. The role will start as a contractor with a view to it moving full-time depending on performance.

• →Build and maintain modern web product surfaces (frontend + backend) with high quality and velocity
• →Design and operate production AI systems: LLM integration, tool/agent orchestration, grounding/RAG patterns, and evaluation loops
• →Work with computer vision in practical product contexts, from prototyping to deployment
• →Ensure scalability, reliability, and security across the stack (multi-tenant, RBAC, auditability)
• →Contribute to infrastructure and operations: deployments, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring
• →Collaborate closely with founders/product/eng to ship high-impact features quickly

• 5+ years professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years experience with AI/ML
• Strong full-stack background: modern React-based frontend + backend services (Python + FASTAPI required)
• Familiarity with computer vision fundamentals and practical implementation (e.g., image/video pipelines, embeddings, OCR, detectors, or VLM usage)
• Model deployment experience in production (serving, versioning, monitoring, latency/cost optimization)
• Hands-on experience shipping AI-enabled features in production (LLM APIs, tool/function calling, grounding/RAG, reliability/safety patterns)
• Strong engineering fundamentals: databases/data modeling, observability, secure-by-default design, and collaborative workflows

Backend: Python, FastAPI, OpenAI, Gemini, Livekit, Langchain

Database: Postgres

Infrastructure: AWS, GitHub Actions, Docker

• Object detection-related experience (training, fine-tuning, evaluation, and inference optimization)
• NLP experience beyond LLM APIs (tokenization, traditional ML, retrieval/ranking, evaluation, sentiment analysis, topic modeling experience)
• Experience with queues/workers, caching layers, and performance tuning in distributed systems
