We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer / Developer to take end-to-end ownership of data engineering and backend development across a growing business environment. In this hands-on senior role, you will dedicate approximately 75% of your time to data engineering and 25% to backend development, building scalable solutions that improve business operations and financial visibility. You will work extensively with Microsoft Azure, SQL databases, data pipelines, and integrations across financial and CRM platforms. Collaborating closely with the CFO, leadership team, and existing developers, you will translate complex business requirements into practical, production-ready technical solutions. A key focus will be automating manual financial processes, improving data infrastructure, and developing reliable reporting and analytical capabilities. This is an opportunity to work autonomously, influence technical decisions, and deliver measurable business value within a collaborative, remote-first environment.
End-to-End Data Engineering Ownership:
Take primary responsibility for the organization's data environment, managing requirements from initial discovery and solution design through implementation, deployment, and production support.
Assess existing data infrastructure, including legacy SQL databases and the broader Azure environment, identifying opportunities to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
Build, maintain, and optimize data pipelines and integrations across Microsoft Azure, HubSpot, Xero, and Stripe.
Develop effective data models and ensure the accuracy, consistency, accessibility, and integrity of business-critical information.
Make pragmatic technical decisions, prioritizing improvements to existing systems over unnecessary platform replacements or complete rebuilds.
Financial Data and Business Process Automation:
Prioritize payroll-related data requirements and develop an automated invoicing system to replace existing manual processes.
Collaborate closely with the CFO to understand financial operations, reporting requirements, and business priorities.
Analyze club financial performance, membership utilization, and operational metrics, producing meaningful reports for individual clubs and internal stakeholders.
Integrate CRM and financial information to provide visibility into campaign expenditure, customer acquisition costs, and overall business costs.
Deliver actionable analysis against established business KPIs to support financial planning, operational efficiency, and management decision-making.
Automate repetitive business processes and data workflows using Power Automate or other suitable technologies.
Handle sensitive payroll, financial, and commercial information with the highest standards of confidentiality and data protection.
Backend Development and System Integration:
Dedicate approximately 25% of the role to backend development, building data services, REST APIs, and application functionality.
Develop and maintain integrations that connect internal applications with external platforms and business systems.
Collaborate with two existing developers when more extensive application development or technical implementation is required.
Use appropriate development practices, including version control and Git, to ensure maintainable and reliable software delivery.
Business Intelligence and Reporting:
Maintain and improve the existing Power BI environment, ensuring reporting solutions remain effective and aligned with business requirements.
Develop and optimize dashboards, financial reports, dataflows, and analytical models.
Evaluate Power BI licensing costs, technical limitations, and reporting capabilities, recommending alternative business intelligence tools when they offer better value.
Translate financial and operational requirements into clear reporting solutions that improve business visibility and support informed decisions.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Technical Delivery:
Work closely with the CFO and senior leadership to understand business challenges and translate them into practical data engineering solutions.
Take independent ownership of technical priorities and deliver solutions from concept to production without requiring extensive specifications or supervision.
Communicate technical decisions, progress, and potential challenges clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Balance immediate business needs with longer-term improvements to the data architecture and application environment.
