Lead, Full Stack Engineer
Quick Summary
Lead,
Lead, Full Stack Engineer
The Lead Full Stack Engineer builds and supports Jacent Retail's custom web applications and leads hands-on adoption of generative AI in how the team builds software and runs business processes. This role designs and delivers custom applications end to end. The engineer works alongside the packaged platforms that run the business (NetSuite, Boomi, Movista, Snowflake and WCS), building any integrations and extensions that connect them to custom applications. On a lean team, this person is a builder first: writing production code most of the time, using AI-assisted development tools to deliver faster, and recommending the right technology for the problem rather than defaulting to a specific framework.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain custom web applications using React on the front end, FastAPI (Python) services, and PostgreSQL, from requirements and design through testing, deployment, and support.
- Build APIs, back-end services, and user interfaces that are scalable, maintainable, and easy for business users to work with.
- Work with business analysts, system owners, and business stakeholders to turn operational problems into practical technical solutions, including applications that automate manual workflows.
- Design and build AI-enabled applications and automation using AWS Bedrock, large language models, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) where they fit the problem.
- Prototype and deliver AI agents and agentic workflows that automate development processes, with clear guardrails, logging, and human review where needed.
- Use AI-assisted development tools (for example Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor) to improve development speed, code quality, testing, and documentation, and share effective practices with the team.
- Build and consume REST APIs and Boomi integrations that connect custom applications and AI services with NetSuite, Movista, WCS, and internal data sources, with attention to data quality and error handling.
- Apply modern engineering practices, including source control and branching, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code, in line with the standards set by the Development Manager.
- Deploy and operate applications on AWS, including environments, monitoring, logging, and secure development practices (authentication, authorization, secrets management, dependency patching).
- Support production applications: triage incidents, resolve root causes, and maintain runbooks and documentation so support does not depend on any single person.
- Evaluate existing architecture and emerging AI frameworks and tools, and recommend changes that improve scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- Help define secure, reliable patterns for AI application development, including prompt and model evaluation, data handling, and cost monitoring.
- Collaborate with external development partners and contract developers to deliver projects on time and to the team's quality bar.
- Understand and demonstrate safe work practices at all times to ensure a safe work environment.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Complete special projects and other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Full-stack depth: React with JavaScript/TypeScript front ends, Python FastAPI (or similar) back ends, RESTful API design, and PostgreSQL data modeling.
- Ability to build, deploy, and operate applications on AWS or a comparable cloud platform, using CI/CD and containerization.
- Working knowledge of generative AI and large language models, including prompt design, model selection, and integrating AI services into applications.
- Effective daily use of AI-assisted coding tools, with the judgment to review and test what they produce.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including Git workflows, automated testing, code review, secure coding practices (OWASP), and application observability.
- Understanding of system integration through REST APIs, webhooks, and file-based exchanges, and how custom applications fit alongside ERP and integration platforms.
- Ability to independently design, build, and ship production-ready applications with minimal oversight.
- Strong problem analysis and root-cause skills across applications, integrations, and data.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical trade-offs to business stakeholders.
- Strong sense of ownership and the ability to stay productive in a fully remote setting.
Experience and Credentials
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of full-stack software development experience building and supporting production web applications.
- Production experience with React, Python (FastAPI or a comparable framework), and PostgreSQL in AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
- Hands-on experience building applications or automation that use generative AI or LLMs, professionally or through substantial project work.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel), Jira, and a Git hosting platform such as GitHub or Bitbucket.
Preferred
- Experience with AWS Bedrock or other cloud-based generative AI services.
- Experience building AI agents or agentic workflows, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, and orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph.
- Experience with NetSuite, Boomi, or other enterprise integration platforms.
- Exposure to retail merchandising, warehouse, distribution, or supply chain technology.
- Experience working with offshore development teams or external engineering partners.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Fully remote. Candidates must reside in the Eastern or Central time zone. Mountain time zone will be considered for candidates who are willing to work Eastern time business hours. Pacific time zone candidates are not eligible.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to travel occasionally for meetings, training sessions, or team events.
- Must be able to communicate effectively over the phone and via digital platforms.
