Our client is seeking to recruit an experienced Marine Mechanical Engineer to join their team and take responsibility for the technical performance and mechanical reliability of their fleet of approximately 35 vessels operating across the Mediterranean.

This is primarily a technical, planning, maintenance, and procurement role, working closely with vessel crews, mechanics, contractors, and suppliers to ensure the fleet remains reliable and operational throughout the season.

Responsibilities

  • →Develop and manage planned maintenance systems for the fleet, including schedules, work orders, running hours, and service history.
  • →Work closely with the Fleet Superintendent to coordinate maintenance carried out by in-house mechanics and external contractors.
  • →Act as the technical reference for main engines, gearboxes, propulsion systems, generators, pumps, compressors, hydraulics, and deck machinery.
  • →Plan maintenance according to the operational calendar to ensure vessels are available when required.
  • →Identify required parts using technical manuals, parts catalogues, engine serial numbers, and OEM documentation.
  • →Source and purchase parts and technical services from local and international suppliers.
  • →Request and compare quotations based on price, quality, and lead time.
  • →Raise purchase orders and follow up on deliveries, imports, returns, and warranty claims.
  • →Develop and maintain a network of approved suppliers and service providers.
  • →Manage critical spare parts and maintain appropriate stock levels to minimise vessel downtime.
  • →Monitor maintenance and spare parts budgets and track costs across the fleet.
  • →Maintain accurate technical documentation, manuals, certificates, inspection records, and purchase history.
  • →Recommend upgrades, replacements, and refits to improve reliability, efficiency, and long-term operating costs.

Requirements

  • Degree or MCAST Diploma in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline at MQF Level 5 or above.
  • At least 3 years of experience in marine engineering, fleet maintenance, or a technical superintendent role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, hydraulics, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Experience in maintenance planning and the procurement of technical parts and services.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Strong analytical and fault-finding skills, with the ability to identify problems and develop clear technical solutions.
  • Highly organised and detail-oriented, particularly when dealing with part numbers, specifications, and technical records.
  • Strong commercial awareness and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with crews, mechanics, contractors, suppliers, and management.
  • Good spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of Maltese will be considered an advantage.
