PayPay, a fintech company providing a service enjoyed by 70 million users (as of July 2025) merely 7 years since its launch in 2018 in Japan. The company is now home to a very diverse team of members from more than 50 countries. We grew to a team of several thousand employees in Japan but are far from over. We are still in the Day 1. Every day, new members join us from all over the world to create new value and deliver it to society.

To build our Payment services, we got technical cooperation from Paytm (A large payment service company in India). And based on their customer-first technologies , we created and expanded the smartphone payment service in Japan. Therefore, we have decided to establish a development base in India, because it is a major IT country with many talented engineers, as evidenced by the fact that cutting-edge mobile payments can continue to be generated.

At PayPay, we believe the future of software development is AI-augmented engineering. Every engineer is expected to actively leverage AI tools for code reviews, testing, documentation, debugging, and productivity improvements. AI is not optional — it is a mandatory part of our daily engineering workflow. Candidates must demonstrate both hands-on experience and the right mindset to integrate AI effectively into their workflow, while maintaining the engineering rigor, ownership, and problem-solving skills that only humans can provide.

PayPay India is looking for a Backend engineer to work on our payment system to deliver the best payment experience for our customers.

Responsibilities

→Design large scale systems with high complexity to support our high throughput applications.
→Understand how to leverage infrastructure for solving such large scale problems.
→Develop tools and contribute to open source wherever possible.
→Adopt problem solving as a way of life – always go to root cause! Support the code you write in production.

Requirements

4+ years of Experience in using Java under professional environment, or if you are non-Java user, excellent skills in generalized programming languages, such as Scala, Python and Go.
Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed.
Experience with NoSQL databases and distributed cache.
Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms and object oriented programming.
In-depth understanding of concurrency and distributed computing.
Degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or 5+ years equivalent experience in SaaS platform development.
Business of English or Japanese

Requirements

Experience with implementing platform components such as RESTful APIs, Pub/Sub Systems, Database Clients.
Experience with AWS services.
Experience in working for system development in finance, payment, or similar industries
Experience in system design, development of web system which handles massive amount of transactions or requires scalability
Experience in microservices
Leverage AI/LLM-based tools in daily workflows (e.g., code development, reviews, testing, debugging, documentation), while ensuring human oversight, judgment, and accountability drive the final product.
