Global Health Security Advisor

Are you looking to get your foot in the door of Global Health Security and have 2-3 years’ experience working in epidemiology at your state, county or city health department, then come to Liberia. Liberia continues to face significant public health challenges rooted in its history of prolonged civil conflict and devastating Ebola Virus Disease epidemic. These events severely impacted the country’s healthcare infrastructure, limited access to quality care, and frequent outbreaks of infectious disease such as M Pox and Lassa Fever. While all pillars of Global Health Security (GHS) have been operationalized to detect and respond to disease outbreaks, they are not yet functioning in a fully coordinated or responsive manner. In collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Peace Corps Liberia is working alongside County Health Teams (CHTs) to strengthen surveillance systems, particularly in rural communities where gaps are most pronounced.

Addressing these challenges through targeted support and capacity building will significantly enhance Liberia’s ability to prevent, detect and respond to public health threats. Peace Corps Response Volunteers will play a vital role in this effort by working directly alongside CHTs to implement robust disease surveillance and response systems. Their contributions will help ensure that health intervention is timely, transparent, and effective, ultimately improving health outcomes at the community level. Strengthening Liberia’s GHS infrastructure not only benefits local populations but also contributes to regional and global health resilience, reinforcing the country’s ability to manage future health emergencies.

Bachelor's degree in public health, international development, statistics, social science, or a related field.
AND
Two or more years of experience with monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL), including the use of data collection and analysis software.

The PCRV will be posted in a regional capital and live in a self-contained apartment or house with a separate kitchen, bathroom, and sitting area. Housing may not have consistent running water or electricity but will include a bathroom with a western-style toilet that requires manual flushing and a shower for bucket bathing. Volunteers should also expect limited cell coverage in some areas.

Exposure to High-Impact Work: Liberia has faced significant public health challenges, including the Ebola outbreak in 2014–2016. Working in such a context means contributing to critical health interventions, disease surveillance, and outbreak response—skills that are highly sought after globally.
Networking, Collaboration with the CDC and Career Advancement: This position partners with the CDC here in Liberia giving experience working with the CDC in an international setting. Employers in global health, public policy, and international development value candidates with field experience in challenging environments. It shows resilience, leadership, and the ability to work under pressure—all critical for senior roles
Contribution to Sustainable Health Systems: GHS work often focuses on building long-term capacity—such as training health workers, improving data systems, and strengthening policy frameworks. This kind of experience demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development and systems thinking.

How you and the community will make an impact together:
Integrate into the County Health Team by collaborating with county health officials during outbreak investigations and responses

Provide just-in-time trainings and routine supportive supervision to county and district health officers on outbreak investigation, situational reporting, and risk communication

Work with health officials to develop and deliver culturally appropriate risk communication materials and messages to communities
Support the development and review of “all hazards” emergency response plans at the county level

Identify and train local Liberian volunteers for land points-of-entry and outbreak rapid response teams

Mentor county and district health staff in implementing and evaluating integrated disease surveillance and response activities

Provide technical support for health education and promotion, emphasizing compliance with national health regulations

Collaborate with community health focal persons to engage and mentor community health volunteers and partners in public health outreach and data collection

After a 2-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban community where you will collaborate with the county health team. You will work with the partner and your community to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with the established goals.

Peace Corps Liberia will equip you with the Liberian English resources, and you may work with a local tutor who can help build basis language skills to connect with the community.
