EngineeringDesign Engineer

As a Civil Design Engineer II/III, you will design the site layouts, grading, drainage, and access roads that make utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage projects buildable. Civil design sets a project’s footprint on the land and shapes how it is permitted, priced, and constructed. You will turn survey, geotechnical, and site constraint data into civil land development sheet sets in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, working with structural, electrical, environmental, and project management colleagues to deliver projects that bring more renewable generation onto the grid.

As an employee-owner, you will share in the results of the work and help build a team where careful, well-documented engineering earns the trust of clients and colleagues. Candidates may be considered at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level depending on experience, technical depth, independence, and demonstrated ability to lead scope.

Responsibilities

~1 min read

Across both levels, this role may include:

  • →Create site layouts and civil land development sheet sets in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for utility-scale and commercial solar PV and battery energy storage projects.
  • →Design site grading, earthwork, and surface drainage that balance constructability, cost, and site performance.
  • →Lay out access roads, internal roads, and laydown areas that meet project and jurisdictional requirements.
  • →Prepare stormwater management and erosion and sediment control plans with supporting calculations.
  • →Evaluate site constraints such as topography, setbacks, wetlands, and floodplains, and develop layouts that respond to them.
  • →Prepare drawings, calculations, and technical documentation for development, permitting, and issued-for-construction packages.
  • →Evaluate, select, and apply standard civil design methods, adapt them for nonroutine site conditions, and bring unconventional problems to senior engineers for review.
  • →Perform essential duties including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
  • →Perform additional related duties as assigned or directed.
  • Lead small civil projects, or defined portions of larger ones, from kickoff through issued-for-construction.
  • Help determine schedule and budget requirements for assigned civil scope, and report progress and risks to the project lead.
  • Assign tasks to and coordinate work with designers and discipline team members to complete assignments.
  • Track design changes and update deliverables when project inputs change.
  • Ensure designs comply with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional standards, practices, and codes.
  • Follow Revamp QA/QC procedures, self-check drawings and calculations, and resolve review comments before issue.
  • Document design criteria and assumptions so reviewers and clients can verify the basis of design.
  • Coordinate with structural, electrical, environmental, and project management staff on site layouts, equipment pads, and access.
  • Coordinate with clients, project managers, and subcontractors on project expectations and design inputs.
  • Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of civil design assignments.
  • Lead multiple civil projects at once, preparing and owning scope, schedule, and budget for assigned work.
  • Independently formulate and solve complex grading, drainage, and site design problems, seeking guidance only on unconventional conditions.
  • Support client interaction for multiple projects in a portfolio, including design reviews and technical clarifications.
  • Develop work plans for project tasks, and assign and direct the work of discipline team members.
  • Mentor Engineer I and II staff and review their drawings and calculations.
  • Assist with proposals for professional engineering services.
  • Act as Engineer of Record on civil design packages when licensed and assigned.

Requirements

  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Experience preparing civil land development sheet sets, including grading, site drainage, and access road design.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering principles, standards, and codes for site development.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex design problems and document the engineering judgment behind them.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with utility-scale solar PV or battery energy storage projects.
  • Advanced grading design experience on large, complex sites.
  • Experience with stormwater management or erosion and sediment control design.
  • Working knowledge of GIS software.
