Mechanical Design Engineer

Solar Cable Management Systems  |  Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, FEA & CFD

Location:  Fully remote

Working Hours:  8:00 AM – 5:00 PM MST (11:00 PM – 8:00 AM PHT)

Engagement:  Full-time independent contractor

Compensation:  TBD

We are a U.S.-based manufacturer of precision-engineered, all-metal cable management systems for utility-scale solar (PV) and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. AWM's hangers, cleats, rails, and mounting systems are engineered for structural reliability, optimized ampacity, and 40-plus-year field lifespans.

All ten of the top-ranked EPCs in North America work with our company, and the company holds a growing portfolio of industry innovation awards, including a 2025 "Best in Show" win for large-scale innovation. With roughly 150 GW of manufacturing capacity, we sit at the center of how large solar and storage sites get built. Its products succeed or fail on mechanical performance — how they hold up under load, tension, sag, wind, and thermal conditions — which makes strong in-house design and simulation engineering central to the business.

About the Role

~1 min read

This role owns the hands-on design and engineering validation behind our hardware, plus the project-level execution that gets those products specified onto solar and storage sites. It is a builder's seat, not a review seat: you will develop and modify 3D models in Autodesk Inventor, produce the 2D and installation drawings that manufacturing and EPC field teams rely on, and run your own FEA and CFD simulations to prove out structural and thermal performance.

Alongside that product work, you will perform project takeoffs in AutoCAD for new and existing solar farms, translating project specifications into accurate quantities and drawings that feed quoting and proposals. The right person is equally comfortable modeling a new component, validating it through simulation, and turning a project spec into a clean takeoff — and can move between long-cycle design work and fast-turn project deliverables.

Responsibilities

~2 min read

3D Modeling & Product Design (Autodesk Inventor)

  • Develop new 3D models for cable management components and assemblies in Autodesk Inventor.
  • Modify and iterate on existing 3D models to meet evolving product and project requirements.
  • Design project-specific hardware configurations that align with engineering intent and manufacturability.

Drafting & Technical Documentation

  • Create and annotate detailed 2D drawings derived from 3D models.
  • Prepare project-specific installation drawings for field crews and EPC partners.
  • Produce takeoff-related project drawings and maintain drafting accuracy and standards throughout.

Engineering Analysis & Simulation

  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate structural performance under load, cable tension, sag, wind, and pile moment conditions.
  • Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to support airflow and ampacity optimization.
  • Conduct design verification and installation calculations, confirming that solutions meet project specifications and safety standards.

Project Takeoffs & Estimation

  • Perform accurate takeoffs for new and existing projects using AutoCAD.
  • Interpret project specifications and translate them into reliable quantities and Bills of Materials (BOM).
  • Support quoting and technical proposals with dependable, well-documented data.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with engineering, sales, and project management teams to keep deliverables aligned throughout the design and proposal process.
  • Present drawings, findings, and analysis results clearly to both internal teams and external EPC stakeholders.

Requirements

~1 min read
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  • Hands-on proficiency in Autodesk Inventor — creating new 3D models and modifying existing ones, not just reviewing them.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting and performing project takeoffs.
  • Demonstrated experience performing FEA (structural) and CFD (fluid / thermal) simulations.
  • Experience creating and annotating manufacturing and installation drawings from 3D models.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and engineering drawings independently.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Able to work fully remotely on an 11:00 PM – 8:00 AM PHT schedule to align with North American operations.
  • Experience in solar / renewable energy, utility-scale solar, or battery energy storage (BESS).
  • Exposure to EPC workflows and utility-scale project execution.
  • Familiarity with structural hardware, metal fabrication, or cable management systems.
  • Experience with PDM / PLM systems and structured engineering documentation or change control.
  • Working knowledge of drafting standards and GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).

You are:

  • A hands-on design engineer who is most at home inside Inventor and AutoCAD — you build and validate, rather than only checking others' work.
  • Confident running your own FEA and CFD simulations and interpreting the results, not just producing drawings.
  • Detail-obsessed — your drawings, calculations, and BOMs are accurate the first time.
  • Self-directed and dependable on an overnight schedule with limited real-time supervision.
  • A clear communicator who can present technical findings to non-engineers and EPC partners.
  • Comfortable shifting between long-cycle product design and fast-turn project takeoffs without losing quality.
