Sphaira is a pioneering deep-tech startup from Berlin specialising in the fusion of autonomous mobility and cutting-edge healthcare. We're building the infrastructure layer for intramobility, enabling everything and everyone to move autonomously within indoor environments like hospitals.

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for the design, certification and documentation, and manufacturing of our first product before moving on to creating a revolutionary indoor vehicle. This role calls for a creative problem solver with a strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes.

  • Design & Development: Create detailed mechanical designs and 3D CAD models for wheelchair components, including frames, mechanisms, and accessories, with a focus on functionality, durability, and aesthetics.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Develop and test prototypes to validate designs, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and compliance standards. Incorporate iterative feedback into design improvements.
  • Material Selection: Research and select materials for components, balancing factors such as cost, strength, weight, sustainability, and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Design Modifications: Independently implement design modifications and adaptations to meet evolving requirements or resolve technical challenges.
  • Documentation: Prepare precise engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation, ensuring full compliance with relevant regulatory and quality standards.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality expectations.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholders, including design, engineering, and product teams, to integrate innovative features and continuous improvements into the product.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or comparable
  • Previous experience in mechanical design, preferably in the healthcare, mobility, or consumer products industries
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software namely Fusion 360
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (e.g., welding, injection molding, CNC machining)
  • Experience in G-suite, Jira and confluence is an advantage
  • You are characterised by an independent and self-responsible way of working, flexibility and the ability to work in a team
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Hands-on experience with workshop equipment and testing tools
  • Experience in the medical device industry.
  • Experience with surfacing and complex shape development.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards and certification processes for medical devices.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g., Python, VHDL).
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and testing tools.
