The Accounts Assistant will provide day-to-day support to the finance team, ensuring financial transactions are processed accurately and in a timely manner. This role will allow you to develop core accounting skills, including bookkeeping, invoice processing, payments, VAT support, and audit assistance.
The role is suitable for someone studying towards an accounting qualification (Level 3 AAT), or with experience in a finance environment.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Process supplier invoices accurately and promptly
- Code invoices correctly within the accounting system
- Assist in resolving invoice discrepancies and queries to ensure prompt approvals
Sales Ledger & Credit Control Support - Raise sales invoices where required
- Support credit control activities, including following up overdue payments
Day-to-Day Bookkeeping - Prepare routine journals
- Assist with bank and credit card reconciliations
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records
- Ensure transactions are correctly coded
- Support month-end processes by preparing basic reconciliations
- Assist in preparing supplier payment runs
- Ensure payment approvals are obtained in line with company procedures
- Maintain payment records and filing
- Assist in preparing data for UK and International VAT returns
- Support the review of VAT coding on sales and purchase invoices
- Maintain VAT documentation and supporting schedules
- Help prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation
- Gather documents requested by auditors
- Respond to straightforward audit queries
- Maintain organised records to support audit trails
- Maintain accurate filing (digital and physical)
- Support the finance team with ad hoc tasks
- Assist with expense processing and policy compliance
- Contribute to process improvements where appropriate
Skills & Experience
- Basic understanding of bookkeeping principles
- Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail
- Good organisational skills
- Basic to intermediate Excel skills
- Willingness to learn and develop within a finance role
- Studying towards or interested in studying AAT (Level 3)
- Previous administrative or finance experience
- Experience using Xero
- Reliable and methodical
- Eager to learn and develop technical skills
- Comfortable asking questions when unsure
- Able to manage workload and meet deadlines
- Positive and proactive attitude
