The Electrical Engineer is the core technical role in Tesco’s product-focused Engineering organization. The role designs and applies manufactured electrical equipment around Tesco standard products and approved OEM equipment, adapting those products to project-specific requirements while preserving manufacturability, listing constraints, repeatability, and commercial discipline.
Electrical Engineers are expected to become proficient in complete equipment-package design rather than one narrow drafting function. The role combines electrical calculations and schematics with physical layout, component application, material/BOM definition, manufacturing coordination, testing, and project execution. Controls, PLC/I/O, instrumentation, and communications are treated as interfaces that must be understood as part of the complete electrical product.
This role will require travel up to 10% of the time.
Design complete electrical equipment and control packages using SolidWorks-based model workflows, approved components, controlled product standards, reusable assemblies, and project-specific configuration rules.
Develop one-lines, three-lines, elementary/control schematics, physical layouts, wiring/interface information, Bills of Materials, submittals, and production engineering data for switchboards, MCCs, VFD lineups, pump-control panels, UL 508A panels, service equipment, and related products.
Apply Tesco standard products to customer specifications, determine required options and modifications, and coordinate approved deviations without unnecessarily creating one-off designs.
Engineer power distribution, breakers/protection, bus/conductors, disconnects, control power, motor starters, VFDs, PLC/I/O interfaces, instrumentation interfaces, environmental controls, grounding/bonding, SCCR, and related electrical functions. Engineer or support UL 845 MCC modifications under applicable OEM file-extension arrangements, maintaining OEM/listing requirements and coordinating modifications with qualified Manufacturing and Quality personnel.
Coordinate model and design validation with Manufacturing Engineering before customer submittal/release; resolve constructability, access, listing, thermal, material, bus/wiring, and production issues before they become shop NCRs.
Develop electrical material takeoffs and engineering inputs for estimates, procurement, and project execution; use standard assemblies and validated product data wherever available.
Participate in factory testing, customer witness testing, troubleshooting, field application/startup support, and closeout as assigned.
Work directly with Project Management on assigned priorities, deliverables, and schedule; promptly elevate technical risk, missing information, product deviations, or resource constraints.
Participate in regular morning shop walks and maintain in-person communication with Manufacturing Engineering and production personnel when assigned equipment is in fabrication, assembly, wiring, or test. Engineers based outside Sacramento are expected to visit the manufacturing facility regularly while their equipment is in active production, as directed by project need.
Typically 3-8 years of industrial electrical design, power distribution, motor control, controls equipment, OEM product engineering, panel/switchgear design, or related experience.
Demonstrated experience using SolidWorks for electrical design or strong directly transferable 3D CAD/model-based equipment-design experience. Experience with SolidWorks Electrical, 3D panel/equipment layout, component libraries, reusable assemblies, BOM generation, and drawing/submittal production is strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of industrial electrical design including 120/208/240/480 VAC systems, 24 VDC controls, breakers/fuses, conductors, bus, starters, VFDs, transformers/control power, PLC/I/O interfaces, instrumentation, grounding/bonding, enclosure selection, and environmental/thermal considerations.
Familiarity with UL 508A; exposure to UL 891 switchboards, MCC equipment and UL 845 modification constraints, NFPA 70/NEC, NEMA, SCCR, and utility/service requirements is strongly valued.
Ability to read and create one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel/equipment layouts, equipment schedules, Bills of Materials, customer specifications, and manufacturer technical data.
Working knowledge of PLC, OIT/HMI, instrumentation, and industrial communications sufficient to coordinate electrical interfaces and produce complete equipment packages.
Ability and willingness to work in a hands-on manufacturing environment, engage directly with the shop during production, participate in FAT, and travel to customer sites when project needs require.
Strong written/verbal communication, disciplined documentation, attention to detail, and a demonstrated bias toward ownership, standardization, and early problem resolution.
