Mechanical Engineer

Vertiv's Thermal Business Unit is a global leader in designing, manufacturing, and servicing mission-critical thermal management solutions for data centers, communication networks, and commercial and industrial facilities worldwide. The Thermal BU's portfolio spans the complete thermal chain from chip to atmosphere, including room cooling, in-row cooling, rack cooling, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, coolant distribution units (CDUs), rear-door heat exchangers, chillers, dry coolers, and trim coolers. 

Operating across all major regions (Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific), the Thermal BU serves hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, and edge data center customers with solutions optimized for increasingly high-density AI and high-performance computing environments. 

Within this business unit, the Thermal Advanced Development group is responsible for incubating next-generation thermal technologies and proving their viability before transitioning them to NPDI teams for productization. This role sits at the forefront of that mission, driving innovation in emerging thermal architectures that will define Vertiv's competitive position in the rapidly evolving data center cooling market.

• →Create and maintain 3D solid models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in CREO to support advanced development prototype designs, receiving general guidance on objectives and applying engineering knowledge to complete assigned modeling tasks.
• →Support senior engineers in selecting mechanical and fluid system components (pumps, valves, fittings, heat exchangers, fans, etc.) by researching vendor catalogs, obtaining specifications, and presenting options for review. Incorporate components into the prototype assemblies.
• →Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for prototype builds, ensuring completeness and correct part specifications.
• →Coordinate the ordering of prototype parts and materials, track delivery schedules, and manage receipt and inventory of incoming components to keep builds on schedule.
• →Support prototype assembly and build activities, working with technicians and senior engineers to resolve fit-up issues and document as-built conditions.
• →Apply fundamental knowledge of mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer to make practical design decisions that simplify fabrication and assembly.
• →Find simple, practical solutions to design challenges — identify possible solutions to technical problems, analyze issues using diagnostic processes, and prioritize speed and functionality over complexity to keep prototype timelines on track.
• →Exercise some independent judgment within defined procedures to make straightforward design decisions (e.g., bracket design, fastener selection, routing paths) while escalating more complex decisions to senior engineers for review.
• →Maintain organized CAD file structures, revision control, and prototype documentation to support team collaboration.
• →Interact with outside vendors and suppliers as needed.

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or directly related degree at minimum.

• Min 3-5 years of experience
• Able to travel 10% 
• Proficient with 3D CAD software, preferred CREO 4.0 and greater
• Demonstrated record of meeting deadlines and project goals
• Understanding of electrical schematic and pneumatic drawings (P&ID)
• Familiarity with thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer fundamentals
• Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment independently and/or as a member of a dynamic team; offer and receive constructive criticism.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills — ability to manage BOMs, part orders, and delivery tracking simultaneously
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to work as part of a team, receiving general guidance on objectives from senior engineers while contributing ideas

• Experience with prototype fabrication and hands-on build activitie
• Familiarity with sheet metal design, tube/pipe routing, and weldment design in CREO
• Understanding of manufacturing limitations, break sheet metal and formed copper tubes
• Familiarity with Product Data Management/Product Lifecycle Management (PDM/PLM) system
• Experience with vendor sourcing and procurement processes for prototype hardware
• Exposure to liquid cooling and/or other thermal management systems
• Experienced in the use of AI-powered engineering tools for increased efficiency
