Position Summary
The Senior Engineer – Code Compliance (Electrical) is the compliance owner for Vertiv power product lines. The role ensures that product designs, engineering documentation, electrical systems, components, submittals, and certification deliverables comply with applicable product safety standards, electrical codes, and regional regulatory expectations.
This role is intended for a senior engineer with 5–10 years of experience in electrical design, product safety, certification support, design review, or electrical code compliance for data center, power, industrial, or critical infrastructure products. The role acts as a compliance checkpoint in the product development process and works closely with the Thermal Code Compliance engineer on the electrical content of thermal products and on integrated power/thermal systems.
Product Scope
| Vertiv Power Products | UPS and power systems; power distribution units (PDUs); switchgear/switchboards; electrical panels; energy storage/battery systems; integrated modular solutions; racks and site monitoring systems. |
| Interface with Thermal | Electrical and control-panel content of thermal products and integrated power/thermal solutions, in coordination with the Thermal Code Compliance engineer. |
Key Responsibilities
Electrical & Power Product Compliance
- Review electrical schematics, single-line/three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, power calculations, grounding and bonding systems, cable management, power distribution plans, monitoring/control systems, BOMs, installation documents, and maintenance documentation.
- Ensure electrical designs comply with applicable electrical codes, product safety standards, , and regional regulatory expectations.
- Conduct compliance review for UPS, switchgear, switchboards, PDUs, power distribution systems, energy storage, integrated modular solutions, and site monitoring systems.
- Verify alignment with product standards such as UL 891 (switchboards), UL 1558 (switchgear), UL 1778 / IEC 62040 (UPS), UL 9540 / UL 9540A (energy storage), IEC 61439 (low-voltage assemblies), and UL 508A (control panels) where applicable.
Electrical Safety & Installation Compliance
- Apply electrical installation and safety requirements (NEC / NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA) to product design, installation, and maintenance documentation.
- Ensure arc flash, short-circuit rating, lockout/tagout/tryout, and energized-work control requirements are addressed in product design and documentation.
- Review and verify Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Site Acceptance Test procedures, and incident documentation where relevant to electrical compliance deliverables.
Standards & Certification Support
- Interpret and apply applicable product safety, environmental, and regional standards during NPD, sustaining engineering, customer projects, product changes, and product release activities.
- Conduct compliance assessments during design reviews with engineering, product management, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and business unit teams to identify risks early and drive corrective actions.
- Maintain compliance checklists, standards matrices, technical justifications, evidence packages, compliance reports, and audit-ready documentation.
- Coordinate with internal compliance teams, certification bodies, suppliers, and product teams on certification evidence, product approvals, component changes, and change-impact assessments on existing certifications.
- Collaborate with the Thermal Code Compliance engineer on shared product content and on integrated power/thermal system compliance.
Compliance Oversight & Authority
- Act as the compliance checkpoint at key product development milestones (concept, design freeze, pre-certification, and pre-release) for power product lines.
- Approve compliance deliverables or place them on hold where non-conformances exist, and recommend rejection; final release decisions on unresolved items are escalated to engineering leadership.
- Maintain a non-compliance and corrective-action tracking log, and produce periodic compliance status reports for engineering leadership and management.
- Escalate unresolved compliance risks to senior management when product teams do not close identified non-conformances within agreed timelines.
- Monitor changes to applicable standards, codes, and regulations, and assess their impact on current and upcoming power product lines.
- Conduct compliance awareness sessions and provide guidance to product engineering teams on new or updated standards and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
| Education | Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Power Systems, or related engineering discipline. |
| Experience | 5–10 years of experience in electrical design, compliance engineering, product safety, certification support, or electrical code compliance. |
| Product exposure | Experience with power systems, power distribution, switchgear/switchboards, UPS, PDUs, energy storage, racks, electrical panels, or data center infrastructure products. |
| Electrical capability | Ability to review schematics, single-line/three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, power calculations, short-circuit ratings, grounding/bonding, control panels, component selections, BOMs, and installation documents. |
| Thermal awareness | Basic understanding of data center cooling architecture and thermal product electrical content sufficient to support integrated power/thermal reviews. |
| Standards knowledge | Working knowledge of NEC / NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, UL 891, UL 1558, UL 1778, UL 508A, and UL, CSA, IEC, and CE requirements relevant to the product scope. |
| Documentation | Ability to prepare compliance matrices, design review notes, certification evidence, risk assessments, test documentation, corrective-action records, and technical justifications. |
