Part detective, part field tech, part network explorer. We're re-addressing an entire enterprise network in Reno, and before we can change anything we have to find out exactly what's out there. We need a curious, hands-on person to be our eyes, hands and legs on site: open the racks, trace the cables, talk to the people, and help us uncover what's connected to what.

This is a short-term, onsite engagement in Reno, NV (starting ASAP through end of November, possibly into December) and a rare chance to see real enterprise servers, network gear, storage and platforms up close. No textbook has a rack this interesting.

What you'll do

Working directly under a lead project consultant, you'll help close the gaps in our discovery:

  • Explore the closets. Walk the server rooms and network closets, review servers and network devices, and photograph racks, labels, ports and cabling.
  • Follow the cable. Trace cables from patch panels and switches to the endpoint on the other end, and document what you find.
  • Run scripts. Execute simple scripts and PowerShell commands to collect device and system details, with guidance from the consultant.
  • Collect data. Log in to servers (with provided access) to gather configuration and IP information.
  • Talk to people. Meet end users and application owners to learn what systems do, what they connect to, and who depends on them.
  • Keep the record clean. Log findings in shared trackers and spreadsheets so the team can plan the re-IP with confidence.
  • Jump in anywhere. Discovery is messy. If it helps the project, you'll probably get asked to do it.

What you'll learn

This role is a crash course in how real enterprise IT fits together:

  • How servers, switches, routers, firewalls and storage are racked, cabled and labeled in the real world
  • How IP addressing, VLANs and subnets work across a live network
  • Practical PowerShell and scripting for data collection
  • How infrastructure projects are run: discovery, documentation, daily standups and stakeholder communication
  • How to interview technical and non-technical people to get the answers you need

You'll finish with hands-on experience, a story for your resume, and exposure to a team of experienced consultants.

Who you are

An experienced IT Professional or you're interested in technology and enjoy learning how systems work. This opportunity is a great fit for a current student or recent graduate looking to gain hands-on experience in IT infrastructure, networking, and technical operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a technology-related program, or have equivalent hands-on technical experience
  • Available to work onsite in Reno, NV, five days a week, approximately 7 AM–3 PM
  • Able to handle light equipment and work in server rooms and network closets, including occasional kneeling, bending, and using a step stool
  • Comfortable communicating with others, asking questions, and approaching unfamiliar people
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and dependable, with a focus on documentation and accuracy
  • Available to start immediately and work through the end of November, with a potential extension into December

Nice to Have

  • Basic knowledge of networking, Windows or Linux administration, or scripting
  • Familiarity with PowerShell, command-line tools, or IP addressing
  • Relevant coursework, labs, personal technology projects, a home lab, or help desk experience

No experience with enterprise gear? That's okay. Curiosity and follow-through matter more.
