Senior Mechanical Engineer, X-Ray Source Development
Quick Summary
Job Summary: Take an active role in designing, building, and advancing innovative X-ray sources and specialized electromechanical systems.
Job Summary:
Take an active role in designing, building, and advancing innovative X-ray sources and specialized electromechanical systems. As a key member of a multidisciplinary team of Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Scientists, you will drive technical solutions from initial concept through design, simulation, prototyping, testing, and production release.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who takes initiative, thrives on technical challenges, and enjoys turning ideas into working hardware. You will identify opportunities, tackle complex design problems, and take ownership of critical project deliverables, including component design, modeling, detailed drawings, technical documentation, and the development and maintenance of failure mode and effects analyses (FMEAs).
You will apply finite element analysis and other engineering tools to predict, evaluate, and optimize system performance, using sound engineering judgment to translate simulation results into practical design improvements. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will help define requirements, resolve technical challenges, validate designs, and drive successful transitions to internal and external customers.
Your contributions will extend beyond individual projects, with opportunities to influence engineering practices, collaborate directly with customers, and make a meaningful impact across the department.
Expect to spend substantial time doing real engineering-designing, simulating, assembling, troubleshooting, and testing hardware. This position is ideal for an engineer who wants to be involved in the entire development process, takes pride in delivering results, and is as comfortable working at a lab bench as at a computer.
Essential Functions
- Participate with and lead projects as assigned through requirement gathering, concept generation, FMEAs, Design Reviews, process/tooling development and continuous improvement discussions.
- Personally design and develop new X-Ray products using 3D modeling (SolidWorks), simulation (ANSYS, SolidWorks, Opera/CST) and experimentation.
- Innovation & Technology Awareness: Drive the Mechanical Sources Development subdivision of the Development Engineering team to identify fiscally responsible and commercially available technologies, equipment, tooling and processes in alignment with the overarching Safety, Quality and Productivity requirements.
- Technical and Systems Oversight: Implement best practice engineering methods and champion Moxtek provided Systems with the team.
- Provide technical leadership on project teams, ensuring projects comply with industry standards, regulatory guidelines, and internal procedures.
- Evaluate team input for complex engineering/manufacturing challenges and drive sound decisions utilizing FMEA, DOE, Gage R&R and other identified disciplines.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Sales, Manufacturing, Purchasing and Supply Chain, IT, Quality and Business Development to maintain safety, quality, delivery and efficiency of X-ray source products.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare and present technical reports, project updates, dashboards and research findings to senior leadership.
- Drive knowledge and improvement through documentation of engineering processes and project outcomes, facilitating transfer to production teams and ensuring compliance with design and quality standards.
- Conduct research of high voltage fields as applied to high vacuum devices and high voltage power supplies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, science and/or technical discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering) with ≥5 years of engineering experience in a technical development environment. Master's degree with ≥2 years experience.
Competencies
- Proficiency in manufacturing and design/simulation systems (CAD/CAE) (SolidWorks preferred)
- Familiarity with data analysis and engineering modeling techniques.
- Team leadership and task management abilities.
- Ability to understand the technologies used in Moxtek products and markets we operate in.
- Self-motivated with ability to recognize opportunities and to learn and adapt quickly.
- Experience presenting to internal and external customers and team members, virtually or in-person.
- Proficient in financial calculations related to product cost and department budgets.
- Proficient in project management
Work Environmental and Physical Demands
- Job will generally be performed in an office environment, but may require travel to a Client's office/production facility or Supplier's facility.
- Ability to travel both domestically and international as business needs dictate [<10%]
