JOB SUMMARY:
The Firmware Engineer will develop, integrate, and sustain embedded firmware for Single Phase UPS products, with a focus on real-time software, device drivers, human-machine interfaces (HMI), communications, and system-level application functionality. The role requires hands-on implementation and independent ownership of assigned firmware components, without requiring specialization in power electronics control.
The engineer will work with global firmware, hardware, and test teams to deliver reliable product features, including monitoring, user controls, configuration, diagnostics, alarms, and firmware updates. The role involves technical problem-solving, code reviews, and hardware integration.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently develop, debug, and maintain embedded C/C++ firmware for MCU-based Single Phase UPS platforms, including host, HMI, and communication functions.
- Implement real-time software using RTOS tasks, interrupts, queues, synchronization mechanisms, timers, and watchdogs.
- Develop and maintain board support packages, hardware abstraction layers, and peripheral drivers for embedded devices.
- Implement HMI functionality such as display interfaces, menus, configuration settings, system status, alarms, and event logs.
- Develop and integrate communication interfaces between UPS controllers, HMI, network cards, and other subsystems, using protocols such as CAN and UART.
- Implement application-level state machines and supervisory logic for UPS operating modes, system monitoring, commands, and fault handling.
- Support firmware bootloaders, field upgrades, software version handling, and recovery mechanisms.
- Integrate peripherals including nonvolatile memory, sensors, communication transceivers, and display or input devices.
- Perform hardware bring-up and on-target troubleshooting using debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory instruments.
- Create and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests; investigate intermittent faults, timing problems, and communication failures.
- Document firmware interfaces and design decisions, contribute to code reviews and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of hands-on embedded firmware development experience, with demonstrated ability to independently deliver and maintain firmware components.
- Strong C programming skills and working knowledge of C++ for resource-constrained embedded systems.
- Practical experience with RTOS concepts and implementation, including task scheduling, interrupts, synchronization, and resource management.
- Hands-on experience developing or debugging MCU peripherals, low-level drivers, or hardware abstraction layers.
- Working knowledge of embedded communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, or CAN; expertise in every protocol is not required.
- Experience implementing reliable application logic, state machines, diagnostic functions, or user-facing embedded features.
- Ability to read basic hardware schematics and debug firmware on real boards using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
- Understanding of embedded software quality, memory and timing constraints, fault handling, and practical verification methods.
- Experience using Git, reviewing code, and communicating technical work effectively.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience developing firmware for UPS, power management, industrial control, automation, or other reliable embedded products.
- Experience with graphical embedded HMI development, display/touch integration, or UI frameworks such as LVGL, TouchGFX, or Qt.
- Familiarity with FreeRTOS, Zephyr, CMSIS-RTOS, ThreadX, or similar environments and ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
- Experience with Ethernet, RS-485, Modbus, SNMP, or interfaces between embedded products and network management systems.
- Experience with bootloaders, firmware upgrade mechanisms, nonvolatile storage, or multi-controller communication.
- Exposure to embedded Linux, device-side applications, or complex HMI platforms is an advantage.
- Experience with Python, automated embedded testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), or firmware validation in a laboratory environment.
