We Exist to Shape the Future®

Build the Future of Project Delivery at ARI.
Aggregate Resource Industries, Inc. (ARI) is seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Project Management & Controls to lead complex construction projects while building and developing our project management function from the ground up.

This is a unique leadership opportunity for an accomplished construction professional who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and is excited to make a lasting impact on a growing national organization.

Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will initially take ownership of active projects while establishing the people, processes, and systems needed to support ARI's continued growth. Responsibilities include overseeing project budgets, schedules, forecasting, contractual commitments, financial performance, and customer relationships while working closely with Operations and other departments to drive successful project execution.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience managing complex, large-scale construction projects, strong financial and commercial acumen, and a proven ability to develop teams and improve project delivery processes. Success requires a leader who is equally comfortable managing projects firsthand, collaborating with field teams, solving challenges, and building scalable systems for the future.

At ARI, this position offers the opportunity to shape an essential business function, influence company strategy, develop future leaders, and play a meaningful role in our continued national expansion.

Schedule & Work Location

  • Location: Based in Springfield, Oregon, with regular travel to project sites throughout the United States as required.
  • Schedule: Full-time leadership position; flexibility for travel, project demands, and coordination across time zones is required.

Compensation

  • Compensation: $175,000–$225,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for performance-based executive incentive compensation.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Industry Experience: 10+ years of progressively responsible experience managing complex construction projects, including oversight of project budgets exceeding $20 million. Experience in heavy civil, earthwork, mining, drilling and blasting, renewable energy, transportation, industrial construction, or EPC contractor environments preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and extensive, progressively responsible construction project management experience will be considered.
  • Organizational Leadership: Demonstrated success leading project management teams, developing personnel, and establishing or improving project management processes, systems, and cross-functional accountability. ARI is looking for someone who has personally carried projects while building a function — for example, progressing from personally estimating and managing jobs into overseeing a project management department and negotiating contracts — rather than a leader accustomed to a large support staff who has not personally produced this work. Experience building or scaling a project management organization is highly desirable.
  • Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of job costing, cost-to-complete forecasting, revenue recognition inputs, cash flow, productivity, gross margins, change orders, and claims support.
  • Project Delivery & Controls: Experience establishing and managing project schedules, budgets, forecasting, reporting, risk management, procurement, subcontract administration, and project performance standards.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Relations: Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships, establish effective communication practices, resolve project challenges, and maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Communication & Leadership: Exceptional written, verbal, and executive-level communication skills; ability to influence organizational leaders, collaborate with field teams, and drive accountability across departments.
  • Travel: Ability and willingness to visit active project sites nationally and maintain close engagement with operations.
  • Preferred Systems: Advanced Excel, ERP systems such as Vista by Viewpoint, and cloud-based work/task management platforms (e.g., Monday.com, Asana, Smartsheet, or similar).
  • Technology & AI Fluency: Comfortable adopting and utilizing AI tools alongside enterprise software (e.g., Vista by Viewpoint) to improve forecasting, reporting, and daily project management.

Additional Skills Required

  • Values-Driven Leadership: Embodies ARI's values of Integrity, Team, Grit, and Elevate; leads with integrity, accountability, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Hands-On Leadership: Leads by example and remains actively engaged with project teams and field operations. Willing to personally work through challenges, implement solutions, and support the team wherever needed.
  • Builder Mindset: Energized by the opportunity to establish a department, develop people, and create practical, scalable systems that support a growing organization.
  • Agility & Responsiveness: Thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment; adapts quickly to changing priorities, operational challenges, and emerging market opportunities.
  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes initiative, makes timely decisions, establishes clear expectations, and follows through with a strong sense of responsibility for results.
  • Data-Driven Judgment: Uses reliable financial and operational information to identify risks, evaluate performance, and guide decisions.
  • Talent Development: Coaches, mentors, and develops Project Managers, Project Engineers, and future organizational leaders.
  • Change Leadership: Builds trust and drives adoption through collaboration, clear communication, field engagement, and continuous improvement.

Job Responsibilities
Department Strategy & Team Development

  • Build the Function: Initially take personal ownership of project management on a manageable set of active jobs and establish the minimum operating system before scaling. Over time, establish ARI's project management function, defining organizational structure, roles, responsibilities, operating standards, and accountability across project delivery.
  • Define Project Delivery Standards: Establish consistent expectations for successful project management and project controls, including planning, scheduling, forecasting, reporting, communication, risk management, and project performance.
  • Develop Talent: Recruit, mentor, and develop Project Managers, Project Engineers, and office engineering support; recommend the first project management hires based on demonstrated workload, and establish career pathways, performance expectations, and succession plans. Manage ARI's internship program, including recruiting, project assignments, mentorship, and the pipeline into full-time project management roles.
  • Scale Project Controls: Initially lead scheduling, forecasting, reporting, and change control; over time, build dedicated scheduling, cost engineering, analytics, and document control capabilities as business needs justify.

Project Lifecycle Oversight

  • Lifecycle Governance: Provide portfolio-level oversight from contract award and estimating turnover through planning, mobilization, execution, closeout, and final billing.
  • Project Readiness: Ensure each project has an appropriate execution plan, baseline schedule, budget, risk register, procurement strategy, staffing plan, and customer communication plan.
  • Delivery Assurance: Identify schedule, safety, quality, commercial, and resource risks early; coordinate corrective action with accountable field and functional leaders.
  • Project Performance: Establish consistent project review practices, monitor execution against established expectations, and drive timely resolution of issues affecting project performance or customer commitments.

Financial Performance & Project Controls

  • Project Controls Strategy: Define and implement ARI's project controls framework, establishing consistent standards, tools, reporting practices, and accountability for monitoring project performance.
  • Forecasting: Establish consistent cost-to-complete, revenue, cash flow, and gross margin forecasting in partnership with Finance and Operations.
  • Commercial Management: Standardize change order identification, documentation, tracking, and claims support; improve timely billing and commercial visibility.
  • Performance Reporting: Develop meaningful dashboards, productivity measures, project health indicators, and actionable executive reporting that provide timely visibility into project performance.
  • Financial Accountability: Identify performance trends, cost exposure, and opportunities for improvement; partner with project and operational leaders to implement corrective actions that protect project profitability.

Operational Excellence & Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Process Improvement: Evaluate, streamline, and standardize project management processes to improve efficiency, accountability, and consistency across ARI's national operations.
  • Communication & Coordination: Establish clear, effective communication practices between Project Delivery, Operations, Estimating, Finance, Safety, Engineering, Product Support, and customers to support alignment, timely decision-making, and proactive issue resolution.
  • Project Execution Standards: Standardize estimating handoffs, project startup, job costing, daily reporting, weekly reviews, procurement, subcontract coordination, equipment planning, and closeout documentation.
  • Resource Planning: Build a coordinated view of labor, equipment, engineering, and other project resource needs across ARI's national operations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Implement lessons-learned reviews and translate findings into practical improvements to processes, systems, training, and project execution.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Work in close, day-to-day partnership with ARI's VP of Operations: confirm execution feasibility with the VP of Operations before committing to client milestones, maintain shared visibility into the same production, schedule, and financial forecast each week, and resolve issues together.

Client Experience

  • Customer Satisfaction: Establish a customer-focused approach to project delivery that prioritizes responsiveness, clear communication, reliability, and consistently meeting client expectations.
  • Project Sponsorship: Serve as the client's primary point of contact and point of accountability for project delivery performance and strategic customer relationships; own commercial and relationship escalations, while the VP of Operations leads operational escalations, with both participating when issues are intertwined.
  • Client Communication: Develop consistent standards for customer communication, project updates, progress reporting, issue escalation, and timely follow-through.
  • Customer Experience Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve the customer experience through streamlined processes, stronger coordination, proactive problem-solving, and consistent execution of project commitments.
