As a Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineering (Control and Instrumentation), you will play a pivotal role in the design and development of submarine electrical Control and Instrumentation systems. You will work on designing crucial systems for the Dreadnought class submarines, which will replace the Vanguard Class, currently in service with the Royal Navy. This role will give you the opportunity to work on one of the most complex engineering programmes ever undertaken in the country, which will deliver a product of national importance.

  • Validate engineering assumptions, data, analysis methodologies and results through review, surveillance and audit
  • Provide evidence and specialist support for qualification, legislative requirements, safety justifications and assurance activities
  • Identify and rapidly resolve issues across the product lifecycle, including management of resulting change activities
  • Liaise with internal customers to understand, support and incorporate agreed requirements
  • Manage external supplier delivery including build, test, change and technical queries.
  • Provide day to day technical guidance for early learners in the team
  • Provide realistic programme status, identify risks and issues, implement recovery plans, and define qualification obligations for assurance hold points
  • Support design assurance and safety case documentation while complying with Quality, HS&E Management Systems, procedures, standards, risk assessments and control measures
  • BEng (Hons), MEng or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline (HND may be considered)
  • Relevant sector experience, with detailed design experience of large-scale Electrical, Electronic, Control and Instrumentation (C&I) systems
  • Strong knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), instrumentation and engineering design, with practical understanding of the C&I design lifecycle
  • Ability to review and assess design, equipment and test documentation, including electrical schematics, schedules and signal databases
  • Experience witnessing and assessing supplier testing and reports, with understanding of equipment delivery and acceptance criteria for facility integration
  • Demonstrable leadership and communication skills, with good knowledge of requirements and configuration management

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Dreadnought programme as a Principal Engineer - Electrical Engineering (Control and Instrumentation). The PMSC&I Team is responsible for the design, integration, assurance and delivery of Control and Instrumentation systems. The team provides specialist engineering support across the system lifecycle, including requirements definition, detailed design, equipment integration, supplier testing, commissioning and assurance. It ensures that Control and Instrumentation systems operate safely, reliably and efficiently, with appropriate monitoring, control, protection and system interfaces. Relocation support may be available for submarine roles, subject to eligibility criteria.

We’re committed to building an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified people and encourage discussion of reasonable adjustments where needed.

Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to security and export control restrictions. Applicants must meet Baseline Personnel Security Standard, and many roles require higher levels of National Security Vetting, including 5–10 years continuous UK residency depending on the role.

Here you’ll build a career with purpose and limitless possibilities. Lifelong learning, meaningful work, and a supportive culture enable you to grow with confidence. You’ll be recognised for your contribution and supported with rewards that matter most to you.
