The Senior Project Manager, Mechanical sits on Galaxy's pre-construction team and provides mechanical engineering support across the data center portfolio, primarily focused on early equipment selection & procurement, site design, and construction planning.

As an early member of Galaxy's growing pre-construction team, you will own the mechanical and plumbing side of construction budget, design input, and equipment planning across Galaxy's multi-site AI/HPC data center portfolio. You will run owner-furnished, contractor-installed (OFCI) equipment packages from demand forecast through RFP, bid leveling, award recommendation, and purchase order, then manage submittals, production, expediting, and factory and first-of-kind witness testing through delivery to site.

This position partners closely with Procurement, Finance, Legal, Construction, Operations, design teams, commissioning agents, and OEMs, and you will lead vendor research and new-technology evaluation so each campus is faster, more standardized, and more cost-effective to deliver than the last. Responsibilities below are listed in priority order.

Responsibilities

~4 min read
  • →You own mechanical and plumbing OFCI packages from demand forecast through RFP, bid leveling, award recommendation, purchase order, and delivery to site, and you support changes after award.
  • →You provide mechanical and plumbing equipment, technical, and budget input to Galaxy's integrated construction estimates, schedules, and design process.
  • →Once equipment arrives on site, Galaxy's Construction team owns receiving, storage, installation by our general contractors and trade partners, startup, and commissioning. You remain the technical and commercial resource for the terms you negotiated.
  • →Finance owns billing, payment, and collections. You provide the committed cost, forecast, and payment-milestone data that supports them.

1. OFCI Sourcing, Bid Leveling, and Award

  • →Build and maintain rolling mechanical and plumbing OFCI demand forecasts by site and phase, aligned to the portfolio schedule.
  • →Recommend manufacturing slot reservations, capacity agreements, and framework agreements with OEMs in partnership with Procurement.
  • →Develop technical scopes and RFP packages, and run technical and commercial bid leveling using standardized templates.
  • →Prepare written award recommendations that weigh cost, lead time, total cost of ownership, technical compliance, supplier risk, and dual-sourcing.
  • →Own purchase order issuance for awarded mechanical and plumbing packages in coordination with Procurement.
  • →Partner with Procurement and Legal on key commercial terms, including warranty start and duration, delayed-start or extended warranty options, storage and maintenance obligations, vendor startup and commissioning support, spare parts, delivery terms, title and risk of loss, liquidated damages, and turnover documentation.
  • →Support post-award change management by evaluating scope, cost, and schedule impacts and maintaining the change log through delivery.

2. Technical Input, Specifications, and Budget

  • →Provide mechanical and plumbing technical and budget input during planning and design for HVAC and plumbing systems, heat rejection, liquid cooling (FWS/TCS and CDUs), fire protection, BMS and mechanical controls, water treatment, and generator fuel systems.
  • →Translate tenant requirements and Engineer of Record (EOR) design intent into vendor-neutral OFCI equipment specifications, and maintain Galaxy's mechanical equipment standards.
  • →Provide equipment cost, lead-time, and escalation inputs to the estimates, budgets, and forecasts used by construction and Finance.
  • →Where liquid cooling equipment is tenant-furnished, define and document the facility/tenant demarcation, interface requirements, and acceptance criteria. Where it is Galaxy-furnished, manage it like all other OFCI equipment.
  • →Incorporate Operations feedback on maintainability, spares, and lifecycle cost into specifications and award recommendations.

3. Submittals, Production Tracking, and Expediting

  • →Coordinate submittal and shop drawing review with the EOR and Galaxy engineering, and track approvals against release-for-production dates.
  • →Own the mechanical and plumbing OFCI master tracker covering purchase order, submittal, production slot, factory testing, shipment, and required-on-site (ROS) dates.
  • →Verify production progress directly with OEMs, escalate slips early, and present recovery options.
  • →Coordinate shipping and logistics and confirm delivery windows with Construction.

4. Factory Witness Testing, First-of-Kind, and Quality

  • →Define and lead factory witness testing (FWT/FAT) and first-of-kind and first-article testing (Commissioning Level 1) for chillers, dry coolers, CDUs, CRAHs and fan walls, air handlers, pumps and skids, and modular plants.
  • →Align test scope and acceptance criteria with the commissioning agent and Galaxy's Construction and Commissioning teams.
  • →Document results, track nonconformances to closure, and approve units for shipment within delegated authority.

5. Vendor Research and New Technology

  • →Engage OEM product roadmaps, evaluate and qualify new products and suppliers, including modular and prefabricated mechanical plants and liquid cooling equipment, and run pilots and first-of-kind tests.
  • →Recommend standard product families and approved alternates that enable dual-sourcing and faster, repeatable campus delivery.
  • →Track regulatory and market drivers, such as low-GWP refrigerant transitions, tariffs, and lead-time shifts, and assess their impact on specifications and budgets.

6. Cross-Department Coordination, Turnover, and Process Building

  • →Serve as the mechanical and plumbing OFCI point of contact for Procurement, Finance, Legal, Construction, Operations, design teams, commissioning agents, and tenant technical teams.
  • →Provide Finance with committed cost, forecast, and payment-milestone data for OFCI purchase orders.
  • →Deliver a complete turnover package to Construction with each delivery, including a commercial terms summary, warranty terms and start conditions, OEM storage and maintenance requirements, factory test reports, serial numbers, approved submittals, O&M manuals, spare parts lists, and vendor startup contacts.
  • →Build the team's foundational tools and processes, including the OFCI tracker, bid leveling templates, factory test protocols, vendor qualification criteria, and a commercial terms checklist, and capture lessons learned across sites.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 8-10 years of experience in mechanical equipment engineering, procurement engineering, MEP construction, OEM application or project engineering, or owner-side capital delivery, with at least 5 years supporting data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
  • Hands-on experience running RFPs and technical and commercial bid leveling for mission-critical mechanical systems, including cooling plants, air handling systems, pumps, heat rejection equipment, piping, valves, controls, and redundancy configurations.
  • Experience coordinating equipment submittals with an Engineer of Record, cross disciplinary design teams, and managing production tracking, expediting, and factory witness testing expectations.
  • Working knowledge of equipment commercial terms, including warranty, storage, startup, liquidated damages, and title and risk of loss, and how they affect construction and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent equipment packages across multiple sites and schedules.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with experience building trackers, bid leveling models, and cost forecasts.
  • Experience reviewing mechanical drawings, equipment submittals, sequence-of-operations documents, commissioning scripts, test reports, O&M manuals, and maintenance documentation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to site operations, leadership, vendors, design teams, construction teams, and commissioning partners.
