We are engineers with deep experience across the product development cycle, from initial ideas to shipping hardware, across industries and specializations, who became frustrated by the cost and complexity of modern manufacturing. So we decided to upgrade it.

Engineers make million-dollar decisions every day, and they need tools that give them the greatest possible insight into their products. By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries. We started with industrial CT scanning, which for us was the most valuable but underutilized tool in the manufacturing toolbox, enabling us to rapidly inspect essential components non-destructively.

We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, to the entire business model, making the most advanced manufacturing tech more accessible to every industry. Our company, like our platform, is designed for upgrades. We’re building for greater intelligence, autonomy, and speed. For deeper vision, operational excellence, and powerful insights. And then we'll upgrade it all again.

About the role:

The Hardware Group is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to help design, prototype, and refine the next generation of our industrial CT scanning systems. You’ll work across disciplines - from motion systems and structures to system integration and user-facing features - to develop reliable, manufacturable, and innovative solutions.

Our product is a complex hardware-software system. Success in this role requires systems thinking, hands-on prototyping, and the ability to bring structure to ambiguous design problems. You’ll collaborate with electrical, firmware, systems, and software engineers to create hardware that’s not just functional, but delightful to use.

This is a hands-on, in-person role based in our Cambridge, MA office.

Lead the technical aspects of mechanical design for complex assemblies and subsystems, developing well-scoped milestones to deliver on quarter-scale goals.

Follow your inventions through the full product lifecycle, from concept and design to first engineering builds and transfer to mass manufacturing.

Accelerate project timelines by leveraging your technical expertise to make informed tradeoffs in scope and execution.

Decompose business goals into technical solutions that can be executed by multiple individuals on the team.

Drive cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders to identify technical needs and develop effective engineering goals.

Actively work with and mentor more junior colleagues to help them refine their craft.

Can identify appropriate solutions to ambiguous, under-defined, and open-ended problems.

Excel at navigating ambiguity and remaining resilient through the ups and downs of a project.

Effectively communicate and coordinate requirements with other teams, tailoring your message to the audience.

Consider the short- and long-term impacts of large technology choices.

Serve as a role model for other engineers, and model a standard of excellence.

Have an enthusiasm for utilizing AI tools to their fullest to improve quality and increase speed.

Typically have a bachelor's or master's degree and multiple years of relevant experience executing a broad range of activities directly applicable to the role.

Experience leading projects through a complete product lifecycle, including through early manufacturing and into mass production.

Experience designing motion systems, precision mechanisms, or mounting for imaging systems.

Background in industrial automation, inspection, or scientific instrumentation.

A portfolio of mechanical designs, prototypes, or shipped products you can share.
