Richards Building Supply, a family‑owned, full‑service building supply center in Milford, CT, is seeking a driven, hungry, and highly motivated Outside Sales Representative to help grow our presence in this competitive market.
 
This role is ideal for someone who may not currently be in an outside sales role but is eager to break into sales, thrives in a fast‑paced environment, and understands the world our customers work in — whether through hands‑on construction experience, time spent in the trades, or experience selling into adjacent industries (construction services, building materials, equipment rental, fabrication, home improvement, etc.).

  • What is required is the hunger to learn, the ability to connect with tradespeople, and a genuine drive to win.
  • Build your own pipeline of business through prospecting, outreach, cold calling, and consistent follow‑up
  • Develop strong relationships with contractors, builders, remodelers, and trade‑focused clients
  • Identify opportunities with customers who may not currently buy from building supply distributors but understand our products and needs
  • Deliver accurate information on pricing, inventory, and product availability
  • Support customers through the credit application process when needed
  • Utilize sales reports and data to identify buying trends and new opportunities
  • Maintain detailed records of sales activities and customer interactions
  • Collaborate closely with internal branch teams to deliver exceptional service
  • Provide product knowledge support and training for customers as needed
  • Resolve service concerns with professionalism and urgency
  • Ensure timely follow‑up on quotes and proposals
  • Work independently while contributing to a strong team culture
  • A self‑starter with a hunter mentality
  • Comfortable making cold calls and building a book of business from scratch
  • Personable, coachable, and confident interacting with trade‑focused customers
  • Able to handle rejection and stay motivated
  • Someone who grew up around the trades OR understands construction‑related environments
  • Organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage multiple customer needs
  • Someone who takes pride in working hard, learning quickly, and closing deals
  • Experience in construction, trades, or jobsite‑based roles (roofing, siding, framing, remodeling, etc.)
  • Prior experience in outside sales, inside sales, or field‑based roles that involve prospecting, outreach, or territory management
  • Experience selling to or working directly with contractors, builders, remodelers, or trade professionals
  • Background in equipment rental, contractor supply, fabrication, logistics/dispatch, or construction‑related services
  • Ability to adapt to customers with varying levels of product knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional presence
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
