About the Company 

We provide an enterprise content management platform that powers websites serving tens of millions of users monthly. webengine, our web page rendering service, is the heart of how customer content reaches the public web. It runs on Google Cloud Run, fronted by Fastly's global CDN, and serves every page-render request our customers depend on. 

About the role 

We're looking for a Senior PHP Service Developer to take ownership of webengine's service operation and modernization. 

At its core this is a web-service engineering role. The fundamentals carry the weight: HTTP semantics, database performance, caching strategy, monitoring discipline, and debugging instinct under production pressure. PHP is the language the service is written in. Fluency is required, but the deeper signal we're looking for is engineering judgment around how a high-traffic rendering service behaves under load. 

 

Concrete work in scope includes: 

- Expanding production tests so regressions are caught before customers see them 

- Development of dynamic web page rendering service 

- Migration to the latest PHP 8 

You'll also work inside an AI-assisted development workflow we use across our engineering team. Code review is augmented by Claude. We use MCP tooling and agent-driven processes in day-to-day engineering. We're looking for someone who treats these tools as a peer reviewer worth engaging with, not a rubber stamp to ignore, and not a magic black box to over-trust.

 

The ideal candidate 

An engineer who's run high-traffic web services in production. Has internalized how HTTP behaves on the wire, what makes a database query fast or slow, why a CDN serves a stale response. Comfortable on a production incident page. Writes clearly. Pushes back when something looks wrong. Has formed opinions about where AI tools accelerate development and where they get in the way. 

 

Day to day 

- Operate webengine in production: deployments, monitoring, incident response, on-call rotation 

- Land the CI/CD pipeline for webengine: dev and stage automated, test gates, rollback on failure 

- Drive the preview/production service separation with staged rollouts - Expand the production test suite: page comparison and critical-path coverage - Debug intermittent production issues: correlate logs, metrics, traces; reproduce in lower environments; ship the fix 

- Engage substantively with Claude Auto Reviewer findings on your PRs and others' 

- Author service runbooks, deployment procedures, and incident postmortems - Triage and resolve customer-impacting issues 

Skills we expect 

- 5+ years building and operating high-traffic web services in production - Deep HTTP fluency: semantics, status codes, caching headers, content negotiation 

- MySQL depth: indexing, EXPLAIN, transactions, schema design - CDN and cache semantics: cache keys, Cache-Control, Age, ETag, Vary, invalidation strategy 

- Production monitoring and debugging instinct: fluent in logs, metrics, and traces 

- Strong PHP-FPM, NGINX, and Docker fundamentals 

- Symfony web application framework experience 

- Cloud platform depth, GCP (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Cloud Logging) preferred - CI/CD pipeline experience, GitHub Actions preferred 

- Comfortable using and critiquing AI-assisted development tools

- Excellent written communication. We are async-first.
