The Technical Program Manager, Engineering owns how work moves through the SambaSafety engineering organization, from a commitment or an idea to something running in production. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, this role runs the cross-team programs that no single engineering pod owns: platform and data initiatives, infrastructure migrations, reliability and security remediation, and the engineering side of the company’s largest product commitments. The role keeps Jira honest, dependencies visible, risks surfaced early, and stakeholders informed, so engineering leaders decide on facts rather than status meetings.
This is a new role and the first of its kind in Engineering. It is the engineering counterpart to two neighboring functions: Product Management, which owns what gets built and why, and Global Information Systems, which delivers back-office business applications. This role owns how and when engineering work gets delivered. Where Product has a Product Manager on the work, including the data platform and entity resolution capabilities, the Technical Program Manager pairs with them: the Product Manager owns the customer and go-to-market side, and this role owns the cross-team and technical dependencies that those programs generate. Where no Product Manager is assigned, such as infrastructure migrations, security remediation, reliability, and AI tooling rollouts, the role leads the program outright, including stakeholder interviews, scoping, and story creation.
SambaSafety is adopting AI-assisted software delivery through its Concept-to-Cash framework and agentic engineering harness. The Technical Program Manager is a primary operator of that process, making sure stage gates are respected, verification is real, and tooling removes toil rather than adding process.
Role Scope:
- →Track: Individual contributor on the Engineering career path, with room to grow in scope as the program management function matures.
- →Reports to: Chief Technology Officer. No direct reports; success is measured by programs delivered and by the practices other teams adopt.
- →Working partners: Engineering Managers and Directors, Staff Engineers, Product Management, the Senior Project Manager in Global Information Systems, and external engineering partners.
- →Scope of programs: Multi-quarter initiatives touching two or more engineering teams, spanning platform and data work, engineering-only programs, and the engineering side of customer-facing product commitments.
- →5+ years in program, project, or product management within SaaS software organizations, including 2+ years running cross-team technical programs.
- →A clear track record of getting things shipped: able to point to programs delivered on commitment and the obstacles worked through to get there.
- →Expert in Jira and Confluence, including building epic and story structures, boards, filters, and dashboards from scratch. Familiarity with Bitbucket and CI/CD pipeline concepts.
- →Technical fluency: able to read an architecture diagram, understand an API contract or a data pipeline, and ask the right questions of engineers without needing to build it. AWS familiarity is a plus.
- →Strong stakeholder interviewing and requirements-shaping skills, with the judgment to know when a request is a real need and when it is a symptom.
- →Plain-spoken written and verbal communication that works for engineers and executives alike.
- →Comfortable using AI-assisted tools as part of daily work, and curious about how they change program management itself.
- →Experience with regulated data (FCRA, DPPA, or similar), data-heavy platforms, or a private-equity-backed environment is helpful but not required.
- →Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business field, or equivalent experience.
