Overview

Evernest is seeking detail-oriented, experienced Property Accountants to join our Property Accounting department, supporting our Institutional SFR (single-family rental) business segment. In this fully remote role, you will own the day-to-day general ledger accounting for large portfolios of institutional-owned single-family rental properties and play a central part in producing accurate, timely financial statements for our institutional clients. The ideal candidate has deep property accounting fundamentals — they know their debits and credits cold — and has spent several years reviewing, compiling, and creating financial statements for large SFR portfolios. This role partners closely with our Property Management, Property Maintenance, and broader Accounting teams and uses Google Workspace, Slack, Appfolio, and spreadsheet tools on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform full-cycle general ledger accounting for large portfolios of SFR properties
• Prepare, review, and compile monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement packages (balance sheet, income statement, and supporting schedules) for institutional clients
• Record journal entries with accurate debits and credits to maintain the integrity of the general ledger
• Execute month-end close activities, including bank reconciliations, accruals, and balance sheet account reconciliations
• Research and resolve general ledger discrepancies, variances, and client reporting questions
• Maintain property-level books and records in Appfolio
• Meet strict monthly reporting deadlines for institutional client deliverables
• Partner with cross-functional teams — Property Management, Property Maintenance, and Accounting leadership — to resolve issues impacting the financials
• Communicate proactively with teammates and stakeholders
• Identify and recommend process improvements that increase the accuracy and efficiency of the close and reporting cycle

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
• 3+ years of general ledger accounting experience
• 3+ years of experience reviewing, compiling, and creating financial statements for large portfolios of SFR properties
• Strong command of double-entry accounting — you know your debits and credits
• Experience with Appfolio strongly preferred
• Experience with Google Workspace, Office 365, and Slack
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
• Highly organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment
