Main Purpose of Job

Join Us in Making a Difference at DJS!�\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of the DJS Facility Cook I, so come join our team and make a meaningful impact on youth and the community at DJS!�\r\n\r\n\r\nThe main purpose of this position is to prepare and cook food according to the Food Service Administrator/Manager and the DJS menus using standardized recipes and production sheets while adhering to food safety/sanitation requirements established by HACCP- based standard operating procedures. Maintenance of kitchen and work area in a clean and orderly manner. As needed act as direct care staff and may be required to assist in staff support calls and watch youth as needed. This relates to the mission by providing safe, nutritious meals for youth housed at a residential program.�\r\n\r\n\r\nSome key responsibilities of this position may include, but not be limited, to the following:�\r\n• Follows a standardized recipe to prepare menu items.�\r\n• Accurately weights and measures ingredients for recipe.�\r\n• Uses appropriate sanitation techniques to prepare foods according to HACCP- based standard operating procedures.�\r\n• Prepares special meals for youth with food allergies according to the diet alerts from nursing/ dietitians.�\r\n• Takes food temperatures and records on the appropriate logs.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.\r\nExperience: One year of experience cooking, baking or preparing large quantities of food in a restaurant, institutional or military setting. Experience in a fast-food restaurant or as a short-order cook does not qualify.\r\nNotes:\r\n1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.\r\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Food Services classifications or Food Services specialty codes in the Equipment, Facilities and Services field of work on a year-for-year basis for�the required experience.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\nThe preferred candidate for this position may\r\npossess any of the following qualifications:\r\n\r\n\r\n Possession of a ServSafe\r\n Certification or equivalent food safety certification.�\r\n One (1) year of experience\r\n working in the Federal Child Nutrition Program or a similar food service\r\n program.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. \r\n2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209�of the�Annotated Code of Maryland, the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.10.01.04, general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include:\r\nU.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\r\nA thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing\r\nAn oral interview, and\r\nPhysical and psychological examinations. \r\n2. Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached \r\n3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09 – Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r\n
