Solutions Engineer — San Francisco
Our client is a high-growth B2B tax automation platform — an API-first "operating system" for autonomous tax, with modules spanning tax ID validation, real-time tax determination, e-invoicing, and returns across 120+ countries. Trusted by household-name platforms like Zoom, Uber, Booking.com, Netflix, Spotify, and Canva. Recently closed a $110M Series C (~$195M total funding) with ~260 employees. This role sits on a small, global Solutions Engineering team (~11 people) with strong career-building upside.
The role: A Solutions Engineer (4+ yrs) to partner with Sales and act as the technical bridge between the platform and enterprise customers — designing and implementing high-value solutions to complex tax-compliance challenges.
Responsibilities
- Partner with Sales to lead technical discovery, scoping, and solution design for enterprise prospects
- Create and deliver compelling product demos and technical presentations to new and existing customers
- Drive technical discussions around API integration, gap analysis, and implementation planning
- Become a deep expert in the client's API suite (Lookup, Tax, Returns, Data Sharing, E-Invoicing) and advocate for product improvements
- Support customers on technical issues and ensure a seamless handoff from pre-sales to implementation
Must-have
- 4–8 years as a Solutions Engineer or Pre-Sales Engineer at a B2B SaaS/API company selling to enterprise or mid-market
- Deep hands-on API integration experience: REST APIs, integration architectures, able to read/write code and navigate API documentation
- Can translate complex technical concepts into clear business value for non-technical stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree in CS, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Willing to travel up to ~40%
Nice-to-have
- High-growth startup / scale-up experience (Series B–D preferred)
- Interest in fintech, tax tech, or compliance software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, Stripe Tax)
- Blended background with software engineering or solutions-architect experience
- Ideal source companies: API-first firms such as Twilio, Workiva, Gong, Airtable, Plaid, Segment, Codat
Compensation & logistics
- Base salary: $170K–$220K (up to ~$230K for exceptional candidates); OTE ~$242K–$314K
- 30/70 base/commission split, plus equity and RSUs
- Full-time; hybrid — 2 days/week in-office in San Francisco
- Travel: up to ~40%
- Visa: sponsorship generally not available (US citizens / Green Card holders); limited flexibility for exceptional cases
- Interview process: recruiter screen, hiring manager interview, panel task presentation, stakeholder meeting, founder interview (panel + stakeholder ideally same-day onsite)
