Job Duties
The House Appropriations Committee (HAC) is seeking a dedicated, high-energy Administrative Assistant to support our nonpartisan team of 10 during the fast-paced 2027 Legislative Session.
Working within the General Assembly involves non-negotiable deadlines, shifting schedules, and a high-volume environment. The ideal candidate is a calm, composed, and discreet professional who thrives under pressure, maintains absolute confidentiality, and serves as a welcoming goodwill ambassador for the committee.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative & Office Support
• Phone & Reception Management: Manage three incoming phone lines, route calls, take detailed messages, and ensure prompt, responsive communication. Serve as the primary gatekeeper and control traffic flow to staff and legislators' offices while providing a warm, professional environment for all visitors.
• Legislative & Committee Assistance: Monitor and track legislative bills assigned to the committee. Assist legislative fiscal analysts with subcommittee details, including material duplication, meeting room setup, and logistics. Help prepare for full Committee meetings.
• Office Operations: Maintain office supplies and equipment, manage internet research requests, and complete daily tasks with minimal supervision.
• General Duties: Complete additional administrative duties as assigned by the Office Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience: Mandatory background providing administrative support in a fast-paced office setting.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, internet research, data entry, and standard office equipment.
• Core Competencies: Excellent oral and written communication, strong editing/proofreading capabilities, high-level organizational skills, and sound problem-solving abilities.
• Professional Demeanor: Demonstrated ability to retain strict confidence, stay focused under pressure, and remain pleasant and approachable as a first point of contact.
• Schedule Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including staying past normal business hours with short notice and working occasional weekends during peak session periods.
Additional Considerations
Position Type: Full-time, Temporary (Non-benefited wage position)
Dates of Employment: December 10, 2026 – February 27, 2027
Compensation: $24.00 per hour (Parking provided at $49.00/month)
Classification: Nonpartisan Staff
This position is located on site at the General Assembly Building in downtown Richmond.
